About Sunset Village

Sunset Village is a friendly, 55+ community. We offer affordable living in West Sedona, with 32 acres between Sunset Dr.& Shelby Dr., just off Hwy.89A. This central location has a Safeway, Bashas, Whole Foods, and Natural Grocery stores, Walgreens, several banks, a post office sub-station, a park, hiking trails, and movie theatres all within walking distance. Sedona offers the incredible scenery of the "Red Rock Country", the art community, the annual Film Festival and the spiritual ambiance which attracts visitors from around the world. The elevation of 4500' provides brief winters and moderate summers. Emergency medical facilities are available just two miles away, with hospitals in nearby Cottonwood and Flagstaff. The Sedona Community Center provides lunches, Meals on Wheels and transportation services. Also in West Sedona is the public library, a branch of Yavapai College (with an Ollie Program) and numerous restaurants. Churches of many faiths are represented in Sedona and the Village of Oak Creek. We are a privately owned community, we allow one small dog 20 Lbs. or less, and two indoor cats. We do not allow renting or sub-renting in our community. We love knowing who our neighbors are!

Our Story

"It was 1971 when two gentlemen, Myron Jackson and Joe Kinkella, had the vision to carve 32 acres of Sedona red rock terrain into a family park of mobile homes. Home sites were laid out for 195 homes, and Sunset Mobile Home Park arose from the dust and debris of construction.

The area now called West Sedona was known as Grasshopper Flats, and Hwy 89A was a two-lane paved road with horse paths on each side. Have you wondered about the street names and the crazy lot numbering system? Well, there is a rationale to this. The streets, unpaved in the early days, were named after Arizona governors and other political figures (a unique way to learn some Arizona political history!). The first lots were occupied around the perimeter, and then the park was filled in through the middle. Check your map, and you will see that lots #001 through 081 are all 'outside' lots, including Fannin St. where the park workshop is located. This might drive delivery drivers frantic, but it made sense to the original developers.

Business in the area slowly expanded with the arrival of KFC in 1976, Bashas in 1977 (in the strip center that is now the location of Harkins Theatre), Safeway in 1990, and Bashas' new store in 1991. Sedona was incorporated in 1988 and officially became the City of Sedona.

In those same twenty years, Sunset Park was sold to the Dellaplane Company of California and then to Malibu Properties/Thunderbird Management. Many of the original residents of the park remained here for a long time, some for 40 years. Sometime in the mid-eighties, the park transitioned to a '55 and Older - Senior Park'.

In January 1992, the park was purchased by the Wagner family and the name changed to Sunset Village Mobile Home Park. The Wagner’s have always taken pride in their property and, over the years, have made substantial investments to upgrade and maintain this park. In 1994, the park was connected to the City of Sedona sewer system; capital upgrades were made to the natural gas system four years later; the security gate at Shelby was built, and renovations to the clubhouse and park infrastructure were completed. New walls were added along Shelby and later Sunset Drive, along with new entrance signage. The park remains in the Wagner family, and they continue the tradition of making Sunset Village a wonderful place to live.
